James Bond 007 at the 1982 Academy Awards

54th Annual Academy Awards Poster

The 54th Academy Awards were broadcast on March 29, 1982 and hosted by Johnny Carson. Sheena Easton was among the performers, belting out "For Your Eyes OnlyFor Your Eyes Only" from the film of the same name, which was nominated for Best Original Song. Ultimately the song would lose to "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" from the movie, Arthur, but the performance is a rather... unusual ... dance number which would not have looked out of place in the Star Wars Holiday Special. Bizarrely camp, with a dancing James Bond (thankfully Roger Moore did not take part), a very uncomfortable looking Richard Kiel as Jaws, and what was probably the last ever appearance of Harold Sakata as Oddjob, managing to look both menacing and rather old and frail at the same time. (Sakata would die from Cancer four months later on July 29th, 1982 at the age of 62.) It really must be seen to be believed!

Upon Returning from the commercial break, Roger Moore introduces Albert R Broccoli, winner of the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award that year, and a short video montage featuring some of James Bond's more memorable moments from his first twelve movies.

Whoever recorded the show in 1982 did not record any of the acceptance speeches (blank tapes were very expensive in 1982!) so this recording does not include what Broccoli had to say, however, it has been uploaded to Youtube by the Academy (the YouTube Version does not include the video montage) - skip ahead to 2:19 to pick up where the video above ends:
