We all know that James Bond loves to gamble, and being who he is, 007 is also great at winning. An enticing combination.
There are so many amazing casino scenes to choose from, but here is a compiled list of arguably the top five casino scenes of the Bond movies.
1. Dr. No (1962)
This is the first ever Bond film, and therefore this casino scene sets the tone of what inevitably becomes an iconic feature of the movies. Bond sits at a table playing his favourite game, chemin-de-fer, all the while observing a beautiful lady at the same table. The famous line ‘Bond, James Bond’, is born from this scene as Sean Connery, smoothly introduces himself to both the viewer and Sylvia Trench (the first bond girl), and therefore it is only fitting that this be top of the list. This opening scene is a great characterisation of Bond, and also highlights Connery’s resounding performance. It also introduces what will become key features in the films: daring missions, attractive women and gambling.
2. Goldeneye (1995)
After a big break from casino scenes, Goldeneye brings it back with Pierce Brosnan’s first appearance as 007. Here he defeats Xenia Onatopp, who although is a Russian agent and villain, Bond also has undoubtable sexual tension with. The lust vs. rivalry creates extra energy in this scene and redeems its place on the top five casino scenes list. Casino scenes are often used as a method to reveal Bond’s relationship with other characters, as it often reveals tensions, or love interests. They are a crucial part of the James Bond series, and often form the setting for major plot points. For a taste of Bond life, try your luck at royal vegas casino.
3. Thunderball (1965)
This scene features James Bond (starring Sean Connery) and Emilio Largo, the main antagonist in the movie, going head to head at a card game in a casino in Nassau. The suspense in this scene makes the hairs on the back of your neck rise, as the two pretend not to know each other, whilst very deliberately trying to defeat each other. There is a great contrast between the eye-patched villain and Bond, in his white tuxedo. This is another scene where the tension between the characters is portrayed through a betting game.
4. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
Sean Connery returns and takes first, second and third place on the best casino scenes list. Bond’s confidence in his ability to win is something that presents itself in all James Bond films, but is done particularly coolly here. This scene features Bond in Las Vegas, hitting the craps table in the Whyte House casino. Again, there is a beautiful woman involved, Plenty O’Toole, who he manages to woo with his assertiveness and suave performance. He succeeds in winning $65,000, $5000 of which he gives to Plenty O’Toole, as they walk away from the table arm in arm.
5. Casino Royale (2006)
You might have guessed by the name of this film that it contains lots and lots of gambling scenes. Despite Bond’s love of gambling, Casino Royale is the first film that makes this its main plot point, as Bond goes head to head with the main villain, Le Chiffre, at a game of Texas Holdem. Bond’s trusty accomplice, Felix Leiter (CIA agent) is brought back into the limelight in this scene, as it shows him helping Bond overthrow Le Chiffre. This casino scene also cleverly depicts the suspense and rivalry between the two characters. The intensity of this scene gives it a deserving place in the top 5 casino scenes, as viewers watch in ultimate suspense to see who will win.
